Southwest Symphony featuring Guest Artist: Dr. Mark Jelinek, Cellist

Southwest Symphony celebrates its 40th Anniversary with an orchestra concert featuring their very own Artistic Director, Dr. Mark Jelinek as guest Cellist. His debut with the Southwest Symphony will include Kol Nidrei and “Beethoven’s 5 Secrets”, along with the Symphony playing selections including “Carnival Overture” and Mendelssohn’s “Reformation” Symphony.

Dr. Mark R. Jelinek, is emeritus professor of music at Bloomsburg University, and conducted the University Community Orchestra and the University Chamber Orchestra during his BU tenure. He was also Music Department Chair for nine years. This season marks his 26th season as artistic director of the Southwest Symphony in Hobbs, New Mexico. Dr. Jelinek, a native of Hobbs, NM, holds a BM and MA from Eastern New Mexico University, where he studied cello and conducting under Arthur M. Welker.

As its name, “CELEBRATION” suggests, Southwest Symphony has built this season’s programming around the idea of celebrating its 40 years of success. Beginning in 1984 with live orchestra and choral performances, they have added more concerts to their lineup, introduced the Tour of Schools and Youth Series, enhanced programming with a Cultural Arts Series, and have now grown into one of the leading resources for live, classical and cultural arts entertainment in Lea County.

All Sponsors, Donors and audience members are invited. Children 18 and under are admitted free to all concerts as well as college students with current ID.
